What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is more formally referred to by doctors as "acceleration deceleration syndrome." This name is derived from the nature of the incidents that most often cause whiplash injury which generally occurs when a person is riding in a car that comes to a sudden and unexpected stop or from a rear end shunt. The change in motion causes the passenger's head to whip forward or backward, putting a tremendous strain on the muscles and tendons in the neck. The head then moves in the opposite direction in a reflex re-action causing more muscle and tendon damage. The result is strained and swollen neck muscles that cause the victim considerable pain. It is also possible to suffer this injury from a side impact.
Often the whiplash injury is not immediately apparent. It can take hours, days or even weeks before the full symptoms are felt. Most whiplash victims feel the full effects within 24 to 48 hours after the accident.
Symptoms of Whiplash
When most people think of whiplash, they think of neck pain and perhaps headaches. However, these are only two of the ways that this injury can manifest itself. In addition to neck pain, whiplash can also cause pain in your jaw, face, back, shoulders, legs and arms. You may find that your neck feels stiff, and you have a limited range of movement. Other symptoms include nausea, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, numbness, tingling and vertigo.
Recovering from Whiplash
For most victims, the recovery period lasts several weeks however in more severe case it can take several years. For the elderly or those with pre-existing neck problems, it can take much longer. It might be years before the victim is completely back to normal. Some may even experience permanent or chronic side effects.
Normally rest, pain medication and therapeutic massage are all that is needed to treat whiplash. In the most severe cases, treatment can require a surgical collar or cervical traction. On rare occasions a victim must undergo surgery to correct the problem.
Medical Examination
Whiplash is an injury with very few physical signs or symptoms. A person suffering from this injury who intends to start a whiplash claim should be thoroughly examined by a doctor at the very first opportunity after the accident either at a GP surgery or at the A&E department of a local hospital. Your medical records and the expert opinion of a doctor are both critical to bringing a successful whiplash claim for personal injury compensation.
No Win No Fee Compensation Claims
If you have suffered personal injury in a vehicle collision you should consult a solicitor as soon as possible. Many solicitors offer a no win no fee service which minimises the individual’s financial risk however the no win no fee scheme offered by this firm goes much further and can be summed up as 'win or lose no charge - compensation paid in full'. If you use our claims service there is no financial risk whatsoever and you are paid 100% of your compensation with no deductions.
