Reporting Rape & Sexual Assault

Statistics related to the frequency of rape and sexual assault are sobering. Every year in the United Kingdom, 1 out of every 300 women are raped, which equals 50,000 victims annually. Most victims of rape and sexual assault are women between the ages of 16 and 24. In addition, more than 1 out of every 25 women report having had non-consensual intercourse at some point during their lives, making a total of more than 750,000 victims. Less than one out of every five women report the assault to the police. In order to be eligible for compensation from the CICA, however, the victim must report the incident to the police as soon as possible. A delay of even a few days in reporting the crime can reduce the amount of compensation you are awarded. Victims who do not report the crime to the police at all will have their CICA rape compensation claim rejected.

Criminal Injury Compensation Authority Awards

Under the current tariff scheme, victims of violent crimes can be awarded a maximum amount of £500,000 by the CICA. Depending on the circumstances of the case, victims may be compensated for physical injuries, mental trauma, financial losses and certain special expenses. Victims have a choice of either bringing a claim against the offender in civil court or making an application to the CICA for compensation. Claims brought in civil courts offer far less certainty than those brought to the CICA. Even if you win your case in court, there is little guarantee that the offender will actually make payments to you. CICA awards, on the other hand, are prompt and secure. The CICA investigates each claim and verifies the information with the police and medical authorities. The type and extent of your injuries is the primary determining factor in how much compensation you receive.
